"You get into things like out of memory in Java, which typically we find correlated with things like loading big images or processing bitmaps," says Jonathan Karon, senior software engineering manager at New Relic, which distributes a mobile SDK that reports on technical performance and has compiled common causes of problems. "On Android, you have much deeper control and you can usually make it do exactly what you want it to do, which adds complexity." "In iOS there are more things you can do to leverage Objective-C to handle a lot of the memory issues," says Andrew Whiting, vice president of business development at Solstice Mobile. Not that the problem is the same for all developers. There's a level of corporate citizenship that needs to come up on mobile apps." They're archiving news from the last month. People write code as though only their apps exist, says Sachin Agarwal, VP Marketing at OpsClarity. An app might be spinning too many threads and soaking up memory resources or running on a system that has too many apps open. One of the biggest problem areas according to virtually everyone I spoke to is memory management. Here are six of the top ways your development can go astray and leave your app in danger of heading off a performance cliff. I spoke to a number of mobile developers and asked about the most common problems they've come across. Whether your target audience is consumers or the enterprise crowd, disappointing them is the quick road to being frozen out. If an app crashes, freezes, or has errors, 53 percent of users will uninstall it. According to a survey by Dimensional Research, 61 percent of users expect mobile apps to start within four seconds, while 49 percent want responses to inputs in two seconds. People hate when apps crash, or even when they slow down or freeze for a few seconds.

The possibility that most patients with intrusive thoughts will ever act on those thoughts is low. However, accepting the thoughts can be more difficult for persons with OCD. These results may be related to underlying cognitive processes involved in OCD. In one particular study, those instructed to suppress intrusive thoughts experienced more distress after suppression, while patients instructed to accept the bad thoughts experienced decreased discomfort. There is evidence of the benefit of acceptance as an alternative to the suppression of intrusive thoughts. According to Lee Baer, suppressing the thoughts only makes them stronger, and recognizing that bad thoughts do not signify that one is truly evil is one of the steps to overcoming them. Carrying out the compulsion reduces the anxiety, but makes the urge to perform the compulsion stronger each time it recurs, reinforcing the intrusive thoughts. Intrusive thoughts can occur with or without compulsions. How people react to intrusive thoughts may determine whether these thoughts will become severe, turn into obsessions, or require treatment. Distinguishing them from normal intrusive thoughts experienced by many people, the intrusive thoughts associated with OCD may be anxiety provoking, irrepressible, and persistent. The thoughts may become obsessions that are paralyzing, severe, and constantly present, these might involve topics such as violence, sex, or religious blasphemy, among others. Attempting to suppress intrusive thoughts often cause these same thoughts to become more intense and persistent. ![]() When intrusive thoughts occur with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), patients are less able to ignore the unpleasant thoughts and may pay undue attention to them, causing the thoughts to become more frequent and distressing. Such thoughts are universal among humans, and have "almost certainly always been a part of the human condition". Psychologist Stanley Rachman presented a questionnaire to healthy college students and found that virtually all said they had these thoughts from time to time, including thoughts of sexual violence, sexual punishment, "unnatural" sex acts, painful sexual practices, blasphemous or obscene images, thoughts of harming elderly people or someone close to them, violence against animals or towards children, and impulsive or abusive outbursts or utterances. For most people, intrusive thoughts are a "fleeting annoyance". Many people experience the type of negative and uncomfortable thoughts that people with more intrusive thoughts experience, but most people can dismiss these thoughts. Intrusive thoughts, urges, and images are of inappropriate things at inappropriate times, and generally have aggressive, sexual, or blasphemous themes. Intrusive thoughts may also be associated with episodic memory, unwanted worries or memories from OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, other anxiety disorders, eating disorders, or psychosis. ![]() When such thoughts are associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourettes syndrome (TS), depression, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and sometimes attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the thoughts may become paralyzing, anxiety-provoking, or persistent. For engine applications, a 'break before make' switch would mean that you may lose power to the computer or ignition system if the switch was changed from one position to another while the engine was running. This is important when you don't want to lose power to the device being powered by the switch. This means that the contact that's currently engaged will be bridged to the next contact in the rotation before contact broken to the original contact. The switch above is a 'make before break' switch. To allow the rear battery to recharge, you'd set it to 'ALL' again. This is the position that you'd use if you want to listen to your system without draining the starting battery. In position 2, the rear battery would be disconnected from the main battery so it could not discharge it but the rear battery wouldn't be able to be recharged. In position 2, the amplifiers would be fed from the rear battery. When in the '1' position, the amplifiers would be fed from the engine starting battery. When in the 'ALL' position, all batteries would be connected together and also connected to the main power wire for the amplifiers. The rear/auxiliary battery would be connected to the remaining terminal. The engine starting battery would be connected to one of the other terminals. ![]() If this were used for car audio, the common would be connected to the main power wire that feeds the amplifiers. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected to batteries. In its most commonly used wiring configuration, the common wire feeds the starter for the boat's engine. The common terminal is the one that gets connected to the other terminals. Terminal 1, terminal 2 and a common terminal. The back of this switch has 3 connections. When needed, the power can be cut to the amplifiers and locked out so that the driver cannot damage the speakers. The locking version of this switch and the previous switch are good choices for people who have expensive, powerful amplifiers and speakers in vehicles which others are allowed to drive. It's also available with a key to allow you to lock it. There are also options to break the connections to the field windings to the alternators but this one doesn't have that option. The one below can switch between two individual batteries, both batteries at once or can break the connection to the batteries completely. This type of switch comes in several configurations. This is a term used to many of the switches of this type, no matter the manufacturer. Most of those who use an isolator for marine applications have heard the Term Perko Switch. In this particular model, the 'key' is removable. As long as you don't mind having to manually flip the switch and can remember to do so, this is a good, simple solution. In one position, the batteries are connected. To use a battery disconnect switch like the one below to protect the starting battery from being discharged, you would simply connect it in series with the wire that connects the front and back batteries. The most basic isolator is simply a heavy duty switch (generally rated for at least 100 amps of current) that is used to make/break the connection between the batteries. ![]() This type of isolator is slightly more complex to install than the most basic types of isolators. Most people opt for isolators that require no action on their part to keep the starting battery from being discharged. A battery isolator will let you completely discharge one battery without discharging the starting battery. This often leads to dead batteries and a vehicle that won't start. The English (or Welsh) Longbow is probably the first weapon that comes to mind, simply because of romanticism surrounding the longbow's role in English history ("greatbows" appear in many cultures, from Scandanavia to India, but the English one is the most reknown).
